Olivia Blake has been taken. Out of the bed where she slept. Out of the nice, safe apartment filled with all her ordinary things. Out of the quiet, Northwestern town where no monsters could possibly exist. Out of her whole human world.
But the worst thing about monsters is, they don’t always want to kill you. Sometimes, they want to keep you.
OLIVIA is the uncut, uncensored edition of R. Lee Smith’s first full-length novel—the tale of one young woman’s descent into a dark, savage new world she must not only embrace, but ultimately fight to save.

nope...I really tried...so many have highly recommended this author, but I must come to the conclusion, to enjoy Smith's work, you must be someone who has an inner fetish for the ugly and gross. This story is dark. In fact, it almost only takes place in the dark. Olivia is captured by bat men and made to live among them in a deep, dark mountain. It was claustrophobic. Darkness, dark tunnels, dark abysses, everything was black and dark....These bat people were ugly too. Black eyes, sharp teeth, snouts in their faces, patchy black thick fur all over their bodies....Every time Olivia's bat mate tried to kiss her on the mouth, images of black pig faces swam through my mind.
Sex scenes were hot if you can get past the idea of musky, earthy smelling bodies; two bodies coming together that don't bathe everyday and rely more on cold sponge baths; there is no real scented soap, shampoo, toiletries; laundry is shared and handed around and is stolen from all the raids on campsites around the mountain. Their beds are put together on the ground made of musty, old tents, used sleeping bags, old sheets and blankets, oh and some furs from the animals killed for food(goats, cow, elk)
The plot was also monotonous, page after page of boring story for me. The uninteresting story line and all the macabre, disfigured, sick bat folk that peopled this book, added to the general grossness. I hated the way Olivia just gave in to her captivity, immediately embracing her new life and trying to get along with her captors and especially her mate. He often acted overbearing and uncompromising, and she did her female thing on him, instead of kicking him where the sun--literally--never shines.
I would have wanted to see more feistiness, some escape plans...she was annoying as a character for me, Somewhat lording over the other captured women.
Anyway, I won't be reading anymore of Smith's books, I must say again, because of the way she fearlessly and uncompromisingly rubs the ick factor in your face. I felt little sympathy for this batfolk and the fact that they are dying out as a people(which is why human women are stolen and forced to live with them in their dark mountain homes in the hopes of making bat babies never to return home)
The story was too boring, too dark, too gross, too claustrophobic--for my tastes. Many feel differently-- it's just not my thing.
I was yearning for daylight and the warm sun while reading this book--didn't even finish it, btw. One of the few times I felt a book was dragging me down.

Olivia eBook R Lee Smith Reviews
It took me a while to read this book, mostly because I read a spoiler that the ending was going to be a disappointment. I absolutely adore R. Lee Smith and her books, and I have to say that while yes, the ending was vague and disappointing, the journey between was quite a ride. Beware of some spoilers ahead!
There is sex in this book. Lots of it. And it’s not always good. You have this race of people — the Gulla — who are similar to bats/gargoyles, and they are dying off. So their plan is to kidnap human women to take on as mates and breed. Now this can make or break it for some readers because…it’s rape. And these men/beasts know what they did was wrong, but it was in desperation. You have some women who eventually give in to their new life, and those who refuse to conform. And life is really, really hard for them. And if you’ve read R. Lee Smith books, you know she does not hold back. This book is both beautiful and terrible to read.
Olivia is a strong woman, and some people might disagree with that. Her forgiving nature brings her harm on more than one occasion. And she forgave Vorgullum, her original mate. And I say original because she ends up with more than one. This frustrated me. I hate how he just up and left her, even knowing what was going to happen to her and he couldn’t hold her to him, but he just…gave her up. He might mourn, but he just gave her up.
And then Doru! Oh I LOVED this man/beast. He was funny, he was large, but just a big ole softie. And in the end…he came through for her no matter the outcome. He had to of been my favorite.
You’ll come across many, many side characters in this book. One that I adored was Murgull. Mean ole bat, but she was funny and caring in her own way. Kodjunn as well… *Sigh*
This review is getting long… Despite the way it ends, I liked this book. I didn’t love it as much as I do some of Smith’s other works, but this was still such an amazing world with a race of people you sympathize and come to care for.
So there's lots of sex. And you think to yourself yeah this is cool and then there's more and more sex with more and more men and the heroine's reasons for having sex with these men become thinner and thinner and you begin to yawn and put down the book more and more. And then one day about 70% of the way through you realize that if these bat people tell the heroine she has to have sex with every man, woman and child so they have a, I dunno, a good harvest or a full moon or a blessing from the gods, then the heroine is damn well going to have sex with every man, woman and child because God forbid. And that's when you say to yourself, you know what, I'm bored. This book is boring. Even the heroine is bored throughout most of it. If she's sleeping through it, I don't see why I have to stay awake for it myself.
So I never finished it. God bless those of you that did.
Better books by this author are
The Land of the Beautiful Dead (you will cry at the end)
Cottonwood (the insect sex is tastefully done...hahahahahahaha)
The Last Hour of Gann (as if you haven't already seen rave reviews everywhere)
